about
Architect and Designer, Abdullah Alsanea’s life work and passion is dedicated to exploring experimental architectural research, form-finding cross-discipline, and cross-scale. Looking at advanced robotic fabrication as a method of improving design processes and sustainable material innovation. Abdullah’s training in architecture has expanded his portfolio of projects across a range of fields investigating different phases of architecture, design, and art. Currently, he is examining advanced complex designs, with a focus on their performance within the built environment to enhance user experience.
For Abdullah, architecture is an engine through which surrounding environments can be transformed and traditional ways of thinking challenged. Architecture is a reflection as well as the creator of the social environment. It serves to challenge principles about human well-being, physical habitation, and spirituality. As such, Abdullah is an advocate for widening the lens of the design approach by adopting a multidisciplinary method in his process by including design, art, tech, and science.
Abdullah worked at Populous in London as an Architectural Designer. Previously, he worked at AMAALA - Public Investment Fund PIF (Saudi Giga-Projects) as Architectural Specialist for a year. The project is a luxury tourism development located on Saudi Arabia’s northwestern coast. It is set to deliver a unique, sustainable destination dedicated to culture, wellness, and art. Previously, Abdullah has worked closely with current partners and leading architects of internationally renowned architectural practices such as Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA), Snøhetta, and Gensler. In 2019 Abdullah was the curatorial exhibition assistant, responsible for supporting design processes and enhancing user experience at the First Saudi National Pavilion during The 58th Venice Biennale. The Pavilion was subsequently ranked as one of the Top 5 must-see pavilions of the Biennale. In 2017, Abdullah exhibited at the Angel Orensanz Foundation, as part of the first RISE competition, a unique challenge which sought to connect local entrepreneurs in Africa to resources needed to solve issues of poverty within their communities.
Holder of a Post-Professional Master of Science in Architecture and Urban Design from UCLA, Abdullah had the privilege of working under the leadership of Greg Lynn in his SUPRASTUDIOS. During his studies, Abdullah engaged in a summer of study abroad in France, where he collaborated with Ecole d’Architecture de Paris-Belleville and where he participated in a Refugee Crisis research trip across Europe. Abdullah has, in addition, enjoyed participating in workshops with the Architectural Association Visiting School (AAVS) in Milan, New York City, and Los Angeles.
